What Is a Chemical Peel?
A chemical peel uses a precisely formulated acid solution — applied to the skin’s surface — to remove damaged outer layers and trigger the body’s natural renewal process. As the treated skin sheds, it is replaced by fresher, smoother skin with improved tone, texture, and clarity.
At Clifton Park Medical Aesthetics, we offer medical-grade chemical peels — from light peels with zero downtime to deeper ablative treatments for significant skin resurfacing. Every peel is selected and applied by our medical team, ensuring the right strength and formulation for your skin type, Fitzpatrick classification, and specific concerns.
Peels We Offer
We offer six chemical peel options matched to your skin type, concern, and recovery time — because deeper is not always better. Light/Superficial Peels have zero to minimal downtime, brighten dull skin, even tone, and are ideal for first-timers or busy patients; they can be repeated monthly. Medium Depth Peels involve 2–5 days of peeling and target sun damage, moderate pigmentation, fine lines, and mild acne scarring — the most popular balance of results and downtime.
The Hollywood Laser Peel (Carbon) is a laser-based option with zero downtime, using a carbon solution treated with our Lutronic laser to exfoliate deeply, cleanse pores, and deliver event-ready skin in one session. Ablative Laser Resurfacing is our deepest option, removing multiple layers of damaged skin for dramatic improvement in deep wrinkles and severe sun damage, with 5–7 days downtime and the most transformative results. The Acne & Congestion Peel uses salicylic acid to penetrate pores, dissolve buildup, reduce breakouts, and improve post-acne marks. Finally, our Brightening & Pigmentation Peel targets melanin overproduction sunspots, melasma, and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation and is paired with physician-prescribed home care for best results.
What to Expect
A chemical peel appointment is straightforward and typically takes 30–45 minutes. Here is a step-by-step overview from consultation to results.
Consultation & Skin Assessment
Your provider evaluates your skin tone (Fitzpatrick type), assesses your concerns, and selects the appropriate peel formulation and strength. Your recent sun exposure, medications, and skincare routine are reviewed — some products (like retinol or Accutane) require a break before peeling.
Skin Preparation & Cleanse
The skin is thoroughly cleansed and degreased to ensure even peel penetration. For medium and deep peels, the skin may be prepped with a prescription pre-treatment regimen in the weeks prior to your appointment.
Peel Application (20–30 Min)
The chemical solution is applied evenly across the treatment area using a brush or gauze. You will feel mild tingling, warmth, or stinging — intensity varies with peel strength. The solution is left on for a precise amount of time based on your skin’s response, then neutralized and removed.
Peeling, Renewal & Results
For light peels, skin may simply feel tighter with no visible flaking. Medium peels typically produce visible peeling over days 3–5. Deep peels involve more significant shedding. Once the skin has renewed, you are left with visibly smoother, clearer, more even-toned skin. Results continue improving with a series of treatments.
Good Candidates for Chemical Peels
Chemical peels address a wide range of skin concerns and are appropriate for most adults when the correct peel depth and formulation are selected for their skin type.
- Adults with uneven skin tone, sunspots, melasma, or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation
- Patients with active acne, enlarged pores, or congested, oily skin
- Those with fine lines, rough texture, or dullness from sun damage and aging
- Patients wanting visible results with a cost-effective, proven treatment
- For deeper resurfacing needs — our ablative laser peel or Morpheus8 delivers more precision for severe concerns
- Active cold sores, broken skin, or recent use of Accutane. Discuss your history at consultation before booking.

What is the Downtime for a Chemical Peel
Downtime varies by peel depth. Light peels have zero visible downtime — skin may feel tight but looks normal. Medium peels typically produce visible flaking or peeling on days 3–5, with most patients comfortable returning to work by day 5–6. Ablative deep peels involve 5–7 days of more significant shedding. We will recommend the peel that matches your tolerance for downtime.
Are Chemical Peels safe for darker Skin tones?
Yes, when the correct peel is selected. Some aggressive peels can cause post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation on darker skin if used incorrectly — which is why physician supervision and proper Fitzpatrick typing are essential. We have safe, effective peel options for all skin tones and will never apply a peel that is inappropriate for your complexion.
How is Chemical Peel is different from the Hollywood Laser Peel?
A chemical peel uses an acid solution to remove damaged skin layers. The Hollywood Laser Peel (Carbon Laser Facial) uses a laser to vaporize a carbon solution applied to the skin — exfoliating deeply without any chemical acid. Both deliver brightening and pore-cleansing results, but the Hollywood Peel has zero downtime and is laser-based. Your provider can discuss which approach best fits your goals.
How many peels do i need?
Light peels can be repeated monthly and work best as a series of 4–6 sessions. Medium peels typically show significant improvement after 2–3 sessions spaced 4–6 weeks apart. A single deep ablative peel can deliver dramatic results. Your series plan is designed at your consultation based on your specific skin concern.
What should i do to prepare for a chemical peel?
Stop retinol, retinoids, and exfoliating acids 5–7 days before treatment. Avoid sun exposure and tanning for at least 2 weeks prior. If you have a history of cold sores, inform your provider. Some peels require a prescription pre-treatment regimen in the weeks before your appointment. We will give you a complete prep checklist at your consultation.
Can a Chemical Peel can be combined with other treatments?
Yes. Light peels are frequently combined with microneedling (in separate sessions), regular facials, and injectables as part of a comprehensive skin maintenance program. Deeper peels are typically standalone treatments. Your physician will design a safe, complementary treatment plan.
